NCC Extends MTN Payment Deadline – But Won’t Reduce $5.2bn Fine for failure to deactivate unregistered sim cards, according to NCC spokesman Tony Ojobo. The NCC has revealed it has given MTN Nigeria a little respite by giving it more time to pay it’s $5.2 billion fine, but insists that the figure won’t be reducing.
According to Ojobo, others three Nigerian telecoms operators: Airtel, Etisalat and Globacom had all been fined for the offence after they all missed an August deadline, and were all fined various amounts from $19,000, for Airtel, to $511,000 for MTN.

So according to NCC spokesman Tony Ojobo that only MTN had not paid the first fine, and after an enforcement team audited the company and found 5.2 million unregistered sim cards, the NCC handed out the second fine of $1,000 per unregistered sim card.
The crack down on unregistered sim cards had begun after the law enforcement agencies had revealed that cellphones were used by terrorist group Boko Haram in detonating bombs, as well as in kidnappings and robberies.
“They (MTN) have always been flouting regulations,” Ojobo told The Associated Press. He added: “The fine remains but the appeal and other engagements with MTN may affect the payment deadline.”
