Porthacourt, Cross river State – See Soldier Jailed by Nigerian Army for assaulting a civilian – The soldier was jailed by the Nigeria army for allegedly assaulting a civilian in Porthacourt. The convicted soldier by name; Suleiman Olamilekan is to spend 28 days in prison with hard labour for beating up a female civilian; Ebere Ohakwe.
The soldier is also to forfeit his salary to the federal government for that 28days he is to spend behind bars.
Concerning this case, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations; Aminu Iliyasu, said that “Olamilekan was tried and found guilty by the 6 Division, Port Harcourt.”
The incident which occurred at Omagwa Checkpoint along Port Harcourt – Onitsha Road on January 30, caused a very serious outrage on the social media.
Aminu also said that ‘the army’s response to the case was in accordance with its policy of “zero tolerance to unprofessional conduct as well as its uncompromising stance on discipline and commitment to the rule of law”.
The General Officer Commanding, GOC, 6 Division Nigerian Army, Enobong Udoh, a major general, has assured the victim that justice must be carried out in this case.
The Nigerian army carried out similar punishment measures against two corporals who molested a physically challenged person in Onitsha, Anambra State, for wearing a camouflage shirt, few days ago.
The two soldiers were demoted to privates and imprisoned for 21 days.
